He was inaugurating the plenary assembly of the Conference of the Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), the forum of Latin-rite bishops in India, in Chennai Jan. 8.

"There is a need for the Church to attend to the needs of humanity, which is the Joy of the Church in living the Gospel,” Archbishop Diquattro said.

He said it was not just a gathering of bishops but “a gathering for the witness to the nation. Our unity, collaboration and oneness should prove to the nation that we witness the Joy of the Gospel by our life."

Conference president Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Bombay wanted the Church in India to “revitalise the Evangelization” doing it with “full of life, full of love for mission.”

Archbishop Anil Couto of Delhi, conference’s secretary general welcomed the new members after his presentation of annual report.

Archbishop Couto also informed the assembly about the retiring members of the conference.

The week-long meeting is scheduled to discuss "the Joy of the Gospel.” It will also look at the new forms of evangelization and the ways and means to foster the Evangelization.

The Latin-rite Church conference with a membership of 189 bishops in 132 dioceses is the largest bishop’s conference in Asia and fourth in the world.
