‘Religious conversions cause of concern’

The former CEC said that the major cause of conversions is the ignorance about one’s own religion.

Former chief election commissioner of India said that religious conversions by certain evangelical groups have become a cause of concern and it is time a mission was launched to create awareness about the significance of one’s religion.

“Major Christian groups like Catholics or Orthodox sects are not engaged in massive conversions,” said N. Gopalaswami in Chennai.

He was in the city to announce the 2013 edition of the Hindu Spiritual and Service Fair, which will begin on Feb. 19.

He said that certain groups under the pretext of evangelization are converting various sections of the society and it is disturbing,” said Gopalaswami, who was also the country’s home secretary.

He said that it was the ignorance about one’s own religion and cultural heritage which make people fall prey to the drive by evangelists.

Padma Subrahmaniam, eminent danseuse, said she was really disturbed by the mass religious conversions taking place in various parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

“I have personally experienced the trauma underwent by a family near the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border when evangelists tried to convert the dead body of a person in front of his family. I have a responsibility to my country and have to alert my people about the happenings,” said Subrahmaniam.

Gopalaswamy and Subrahmanian are the chairman and vice-chairperson respectively of the fifth Hindu Spiritual and Service.
