Catholic publication denigrates Christ

The magazine is the official mouthpiece of Catholics in Gujarat.

A complaint has been lodged against a monthly magazine of the Catholics in Gujarat after it published a distorted image of Jesus Christ.

Pavan Hriday Doot, (messenger of the Sacred Heart) an official mouthpiece of Catholics in the state, in its February issue published the picture of Jesus Christ holding a beer can in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

Manoj Mackwan, one of the subscribers of the magazine, lodged a complaint against the magazine for hurting religious sentiments with the Anand police station after seeing the picture.

“I received a memorandum yesterday by the Christian community members in Anand apologizing on behalf of the publication. The image was small in size and black and white in nature and was downloaded from the internet,” said Anand town police inspector P K Deora.

He said that the picture was a tweaked version of the most common image of Christ.

The publishers had claimed that they failed to notice the beer can and the cigarette in Christ's hand as it was not clearly visible in black and white, he said.

The publishing house has also carried an apology on their website yesterday.

The magazine is printed at the Gujarat Sahitya Prakash Society in Anand, which is the publishing house of the Jesuits community for South Asia.
