Christians upset with ‘Congress neglect’ in Karnataka

Christians are sizeable number in Mangaluru, Karwar, Bidar and Bengaluru areas and expected at least one ticket from Congress in the state.

Bengaluru:

Some Christian leaders in Karnataka have regretted Congress party not fielding a single Christian candidate to contest the ongoing parliamentary polls.

Congress leader J. Alexander, former Minister and former Chief Secretary and H.T. Sangliana, former Police Commissioner and former parliamentarian are among those who expressed unhappiness on the issue, the Hindu newspaper reported.

Sangliana resigned from the party April 8 protesting against the party’s “neglect” of the Christian community.

Alexander, who had tendered resignation to the primary membership of the party, has now withdrawn it after intervention of State Congress leaders and K.C. Venugopal, party general secretary in-charge of Karnataka.

Christians are sizeable number in Mangaluru, Karwar, Bidar and Bengaluru areas and expected at least one ticket from Congress in the state.

“The younger generation has a lot of aspirations and the feeling that the community is being taken for granted by the Congress is gaining ground among the youth,” Alexander said.

Sangliana, who was the BJP MP (2004-09) before joining the Congress, said the Congress has “marginalised” the Christian community.

The party denied him ticket to contest from Bengaluru Central constituency and fielded Rizwan Arshad.

Archbishop Peter Machado of Bengaluru told the Hindu that Christians have “requested representation to the community. But the party leaders said representation will be given in some other form in later stages. We accepted the fact.”

“We have given our blessing to all candidates,” he said when asked about candidates meeting him seeking Christian support.

Christians constitute some 2 percent of the state’s population but higher in Bengaluru (about 5.6%) and their support can be crucial in a tight political fight, say leaders.
