Environmental activist killed in northern Philippines

Mario Contaoi was well known for his advocacy against destructive projects.

An environmental activist and former radio broadcaster was shot and killed by unknown assailants in the northern Philippine province of Ilocos Sur on Jan. 7.

Mario Contaoi, a lecturer at the University of Northern Philippines in Vigan City, was known for his advocacy against destructive projects, including mining, in the province.

Contaoi was the eighth environmental activist to be killed in the Philippines in the past six months.

"There is a clear persisting danger facing environmental defenders and other activists," said Leon Dulce, campaign coordinator of the group Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment.

Kalikasan has so far recorded 105 cases of killings of environmental activists in the past six years.

Environment Secretary Gina Lopez said the killings are being investigated.
