New Archbishop of Bangalore appointed

Archbishop Moras has stepped down having reached the retirement age of 75.

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Archbishop Bernard Blasius Moras from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Bangalore and appointed Bishop Peter Machado of Belgaum as the new Archbishop of Bangalore.

Archbishop Moras, who stepped down having reached the retirement age of 75, will remain as Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese until the day of the canonical taking possession of the new Archbishop.

The announcement was made in Rome on March 19, at noon local time, corresponding to 4.30pm IST.

Archbishop-elect Machado was born on May 26, 1954, in Honavar, then part of Belgaum diocese. He was ordained a priest on December 8, 1978, for the Diocese of Karwar which was separated from Belgaum diocese two years earlier.

He was appointed Bishop of Belgaum on Feb. 2, 2006, and was ordained bishop on March 30 that year. Prior to his episcopal appointment, he completed doctoral studies in Rome in Canon Law and served as procurator, judicial vicar, consultor and secretary of the Karnataka regional bishops' Laity Commission, based in Bangalore.
