Resignation of Bishop of Puttur

Some 800 families come under the 24 parishes of Puttur diocese, most of whom are migrants from Kerala.

The resignation of Bishop Geevarghese Mar Divannasios of Syro-Malankara Catholic Eparchy of Puthurin Karnataka state has been accepted on Jan 24 by the Apostolic Nunciature as directed by the Congregation for the Oriental Churches.

He was born Varghese Ottathengil on 1 November 1950 to N.S Varghese and Mariamma Varghese at Thalavady near Thiruvalla in Kerala. In 1956, his family migrated to South Canara in Karnataka. He was ordained a priest on 20 April 1978.He was appointed the Bishop of Bathery on 18 December 1996 and took the name Geevarghese Mar Divannasios.

When the Syro-Malankara Eparchy of Puttur was carved out of the Eparchy of Bathery which covered Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and northern parts of Kerala in 2010, Mar Divannasios was appointed its first bishop. Some 800 families come under the 24 parishes of Puttur diocese, most of whom are migrants from Kerala.
