Fr.Cedric Prakash is a Jesuit Priest of the Gujarat Province(North-West India) of the Society of Jesus.

He joined the Jesuits in 1974 and was ordained in 1985..

He was born and brought up in Bombay where he graduated from St. Xavier�s 1972. He later worked full time with the AICUF (All India Catholic University Federation) in Madras and then spent a year with the TAIZE community in France helping to prepare the World Council of Youth

He is essentially a human rights and peace activist and is currently the Director of PRASHANT, the Ahmedabad-based Jesuit Centre for Human Rights, Justice and Peace which he founded on October 2nd, 2001. He is at the forefront on issues, on behalf of the poor, the marginalized, the minorities and other vulnerable sections of society, in Gujarat and in other parts of India.

In the wake of the Gujarat Carnage of 2002, Fr. Prakash has been one of the voices that has championed the cause of the Muslims, who were victims of fundamentalist forces.

In June 2002, he testified before the US Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) in Washington, on the reality of the Muslims of Gujarat. He has since been involved in a relentless campaign for the rights of the victims together with several other groups and networks and specially with the Citizens for Justice and Peace (of which he is a Board Member).

He is also been actively involved in responding to attacks on Christians in India be it in Gujarat, Orissa or Karnataka. Today he is also the Convener of the Gujarat United Christian Forum for Human Rights.

On account of his expertise on Human Rights, Justice and Peace, he is sought after by several groups / organizations all over India and abroad, to speak / lecture on these issues. He is also a prolific writer on these issues and contributes regularly to newspapers / journals, both in India and abroad.

He was also a delegate at the UN Conference on Environment and Development(Rio,1992) and the International Conference on Population and Development(Cairo,1994)

His expertise include group / community facilitation, strategic planning and evaluation; institutional mapping;conflict resolution and peace building. He has been conducting workshop and trainings on these subjects for the last many years.

Fr. Prakash is also a visiting faculty in some Colleges, Universities and Seminaries. The Marquette University in Wisconsin, USA honoured him as the Wade Chair Scholar for the academic year 2009 � 2010.He has also taught at the Summer Peace Building Institute of the Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia, USA and the Development Education Summer School of the European Union in Slovakia(2007)

He was formerly (1987-2001)the Director of St. Xavier�s Social Service Society , which works among the poor and marginalized in the slums of Ahmedabad. During his tenure there, he began SHANTI, an initiative for communal harmony and peace.

He has held / holds several other official positions and responsibilities in the Society of Jesus and other organizations.For several years(1997-2006)he was on the Governing Body of the Indo-Global Social Service Society(IGSSS)

Fr. Prakash is a recipient of several national and international awards which include:
� The Kabir Puraskar by the President of India in 1995 - for promotion of Communal Peace and Harmony
� The Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award by the Indian Muslim Council (USA) in June 2003 - for humanitarian work.
� Chevalier de la Legion d�Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour) by the President of the French Republic in July 2006 � for life time commitment to the defense and the promotion of Human Rights in India
� The Minority Rights Award from the National Minority Commission, Government of India in December 2006
� The Human Dignity Award from the Diocese of Ahmedabad in February 2010.
� and in May 2010 TANENBAUM - the well-known US-based Center for Inter religious Understanding, named him as one of the World's TOP TEN Peacemakers in Action
